Rosceline Lourdes Aquilina Rose Aquilina, 2012: I am currently involved in writing an article for residents of the Bay View / Hunter's Point district along with writing a book on my life growing up in San Francisco as it relates to my Maltese heritage.
I am embarassed to say I have not finished my book, I have been inundated with daily life activities and some work on "this old house" while sheltering in place and unfortunately have had to place my book on hold. But reading your story has uplifted my spirit to try to work on it somemore, especially the stories that my mom and dad imparted to me about life in Malta and some of my memories of Malta and growing up in BayView. I am in the process of cleaning our backyard and as we have an old barn in the back, I'm trying to clean it up and restore it to its original glory by shoring it up and patching it up with new shingles. It was one of the "real" original barns from when the BayView was cattle country with dairy farms and real cowboys (also a part of my pictorial account of the BayView/Hunter's Point pre 1900s). So you see why every aspect of me living here in the house (2nd house) I grew up in and its significance to the elements of growing up in the BayView. My parents were avid gardners and now I understand why, the soil and growing conditions here are excellent. The barn with a side stable, originally housed a horse and a wagon to be taken out to Third Street to sell fruits and vegetables to the community. Within my yard, I have two lemon trees, 2 different types of apple trees, 2 pear trees, 2 peach trees, 3 fig trees and an orange tree. All of which I can harvest so currently I pick what I can use and bag some for the neighbors to have for their families. My parents even have bay leaf, bird of paradise, hydragea in three colors and lots of succulents, now I seem to be taking on the hobby of gardening. But love the simple pleasures of backyard DIY (do it yourself) and restoration of "this old house". Will keep you posted when I get a chance to regenerate my thoughts for the book.
2022: I have had to place my book on hold for a while, have some personal challenges in my life so have to deal with this currently, but still wish to continue my historical book. I am including little short stories that both my parents imparted to me and great photos of their lives and mine including Malta and America both with their migrating to the U.S. Wish I didn't have some of these major obstacles in my life, otherwise I could focus on my writings. Always keeping you on my "to do list", I'm sorry for my inability to engage right now. Proud to be a Maltese/American, Rose Aquilina between 2012 and 2022. As of between 31 January 2012 and 2018, Rosceline Lourdes Aquilina lived at 1239 Hollister Ave., San Francisco, San Francisco Co., CA, USA; rngrldy@aol.com.1 She was a I was the first (and probably the only) Maltese American female to be a National Park Service Park Ranger (worked in Golden Gate National Recreation Area in Marin Headlands, Alcatraz, Fort Point, and Fort Mason). I worked almost 30 years in the government and wore many different career hats and one of the hats is the "Smokey Hat" and a United States Forest Ranger (worked in the South Lake Tahoe region Forest Service). I tried to find out if there were anyone else of Maltese decent that worked in the capacity of a Ranger especially if they were female as when I entered into the workforce women rangers were few in numbers as it was traditionally a position held by "white males". I became a Park Ranger in 1981. I can remember visiting my Nanna in Malta in 1977 and trying to explain to her that I wanted to be a ranger and work in a forest, she looked at me like I had three eyes. Then I gave her an anology of getting 6 olive trees placed together would be like a forest, she just laughed and called me "purchinella", I think it is Maltese for lady clown. in May 2022. She contributed a story to the "In Our Own Words" Oral History Project in 2024. She noted a fact about Moses Fenech and Philippa Maria Fenech; Rosceline Aquilina stated that her uncle Moses Fenech owned the Paradise Bay and Golden Sands hotels. Rosceline Lourdes Aquilina was also known as Rose Aquilina.1
